Over the last 8 years mono_cult has become an integral component of the Leeds party scene, and this New Years Day will see their final event in Leeds as they wave goodbye to their home city.
Influenced by Ibiza’s day parties, mono_cult has played an influential role in the development of the house and techno scene in Leeds, as well as across the UK. From their innovative Sunday day parties at The Lounge, to more intimate showcases at Full Circle and their renowned NYD events, mono_cult has now extended out to the capital and the brand has grown to become an eminent and celebrated name.
Looking through their rich and impressive journey reinstates the inerasable mark that mono_cult has inscribed in Leeds. In anticipation of their final event on Friday, we caught up with co-founder Matt Long. Read on to find out his 5 favorite parties and 5 most memorable tracks from mono_cult’s time in Leeds.
My favourite parties go a little like this…
Rob Mello at The Lounge – May 2007
Cant forget some of the memorable parties at The Lounge, I think our third one we did with Rob Mello stands out the most, it fell on a bank holiday, the weather was great and word had spread about the parties. All we’d done for promo was prin8 years of mono_cultt off some A3 black and white posters from Uni and bit of promo online and hoped for the best. A couple of hours into opening the doors we had a queue around the block to the Subway, 800 people deep on the terrace with one member of security for the whole place. It was this party that really put us on the map.

NYD @ The Faversham – 2013
From around 2008 we’d been slowly building up our NYD events at The Faversham, adding different elements each year. I think our one in 2013 was my personal highlight. I’d managed to lock down Henrick Shwarz to play his debut live set and Jackmaster also made his debut for us playing two sets: first a tweak-a-holic early party set in the outside marquee then later on in the evening he played a house and techno set in the main room. We also had Mano Le Tough, Krystal Klear, Lauer and Bicep playing over the 12hours.
This was the time we used Full Circle for an event and the first time the venue had been used for anything similar. It was a real struggle to get the everything set up for the party – there was no real toilets, any power to run the system or even any proper fire escapes in the place! Bashmore was just on the verge of blowing up when we held the party so we’d sold out well in advance and we’d ran the event as a ‘secret party’ and only released the address of the space on the day. Loads of work went into making it happen but it was amazing and the owner of Full Circle loved it too, we went on to use the space for several other parties before it unfortunately closed down. We had a little video made on the night that captures the vibe. (Which you can watch here)
Move D at Wire – March 2010
The first time Move D played for us in Wire on our 3rd birthday – atmosphere was electric and it was the first time he’d played in the city. We recorded the night on to my laptop and when left the club a little boozey we managed to leave the record bags and laptop in the taxi so was lost for good. When Move D returned to play later in the year he recorded the set himself so it wouldn’t get lost and it can be heard here, it’s a winner! https://soundcloud.com/move-d/move-d-mono_cult-leeds
Innervisions showcase at Canal Mills – October 2014
I’ve been booking the Innerversions crew on and off for years, Dixon first played for us in Wire in 2010 and id been pushing to work with them to do a label showcase for a while. After months of work I’d managed to lock the line in for October 2014. Canal Mills was the perfect space for it, Room 1 was headed up by Dixon and Ame for 5 hours, and room 2 was a killer line up of Prins Thomas, Optimo and Mr Ties. The music and atmosphere were amazing all night. I remember a group who had made Ame and Dixon face-masks and wore them all night dancing at the front of the stage, ha!!
Too many tracks to use but here’s some that stand out…
Loco Dice – El Gallo Negro
This has real found memories from our early parties at The Lounge 8 years ago, its pretty timeless track and has been played plenty of times over the years. Its definitely getting an airing this NYD.
Levon Vincent – Man Or Mistress
Probably my favorite record from levon and one that’s been played loads at mono_cult, I think Brads version has a scratch on it its been played that often. Always a winner!
Byron Stingily – Get Up Everybody
Bicep closed the night with this on our NYD 2011 party and the whole dance floor got involved with a ‘taps off’, will also stay in my memories.
Lykke Li – Dance Dance Dance (Dixon Edit)
Id managed to get a copy of this record when it first came out and I played it to death at mono_cult, it sadly got lost when we (Brad) left my record in the back of a taxi after our 6th birthday party….The second set of record bags we’ve lost!!
Soundstream – Soul Train
Too many tracks to use but couldn’t do a top 5 without including at least one Soundstream record.
While New Years Day will see Leeds’ last dance, mono_cult will continue to run in London, so keep your eyes peeled for the next event.
