Newcastle and London based House and Techno Duo Blackhall & Bookless are celebrating the tenth birthday of their successful Jaunt imprint and they’re certainly not holding back. Among several other festivities they’re bringing Berlin techno legend Ben Klock to that fabulous new venue in the heart of Leeds – Church.
Ben Klock is an historical landmark of Techno. During his residency at the legendary Berghain club he helped shape the dark, high energy sound typical to Berlin. His 13 years playing the most elusive DJ residency on the planet propelled him into techno royalty and he is widely considered on par with artists that have been active since he was a young child. Full of variety and peppered with experimentation, his sets have a fresh, cutting-edge feel and like several other longstanding Berghain residents, he remains one of the most exciting and in-demand acts in the scene.
Church is also celebrating a birthday – the now much loved venue is turning 1 in September. With its 780-strong capacity and enormous line-array sound system, the venue hit the ground running during its early months as legendary names such as Louie Vega, Erick Morillo and Jamie Jones wooed Leeds’ many lovers of house music into the venue. Alas, for techno enthusiasts there was little to really get excited about. A year on and Church seems to be welcoming an increasingly rich variety of acts through its doors, including a pioneer from Berlin who provides techno in its rawest form.
