Maxxi Soundsystem – Regrets We Have No Use For

Maxxi Soundsystem have been shredding Brighton’s dance-floors for the past decade. But, it wasn’t until 2011 when Kojak Giant Sounds released Maxxi’s smash single “Criticize,” that his flair for production was truly noticed.

Since then, there has been a veritable carousel of releases on Hot Waves, Futureboogie, Needwant, Nurvous, Wolf Music … and of course, Hypercolour!

Hype29 – “Regrets We Have No Use For” is a double A side featuring Name One(?) on the vocals…  It begins with an undulating synth and subtle shakers that gradually wiggle into a stool loosening bass-line, all-the-while immersed in a warm baritone.  The chugging rhythm is curiously therapeutic, but the blown speaker under my desk attests to the subliminal power of this tune!

On the remix is the renowned sound scientist Matthew Herbert, with a syncopated treat of audio tidbits. Muffled beats and filtered vocals drift through unhinged background stabs and swirling synths, ideal for the slow walk home or that smog filled floor of the darkest dry-iced club.

Looks like rock isn’t the only good thing to be coming out of Brighton… 5/5
