Take 5 with Mall Grab

Following on from his stellar debut release of the ‘Alone’ EP, Jordon Alexander, aka Mall Grab, shot to notoriety online via his YouTube hit ‘Can’t (Get U Outta My Mind)’, a rework of Mala’s dubstep classic ‘Alicia’, sampling the soothing vocals of Alicia Keys. In a subsequent string of polished 12” releases, including the release of the acclaimed ‘Elegy’ on Vancouver-based label 1080p, his sample-heavy style, which manages to remain melodic and emotionally textured, whilst maintaining a raw style with classy drum programming to ensure it packs some punch, has marked him out as an up-and-coming producer to keep an eye on. We sat down with him to Take 5.

1. dj watever – Silent (Archipelago Recordings)

“This is just one of my favourite tracks and has been for a while. Repetition is hard to do well, and dj watever does just that”

2. Darnum Samp – LOVESCAPE

Darnum Samp rule. So much good stuff coming from these guys and this track is no exception. I can listen to this any time of day and it will always put me in a good mood.”

3. Lloyd Devastating Jackmaster – U Kinda Large (Dance Mania)

“If you’ve seen me play in the last few weeks you would’ve heard me playing this. Perfect DM grittiness.”

4. Robert Armani – Warning (ACV)

“My copy of this record is in terrible condition but it still sounds incredible any time I play it out. Only downside is that it’s about 3min long.”

5. OG Maco – Never Know (10Moons2)

“Forward thinking hip-hop is hard to come by (somewhat) these days and ever since I first heard OG Maco i’ve been a solid supporter. This is the perfect end-of-night tune for me right now.”
