The Garden Party, Leeds

If you have been a self-respecting club-goer, music fan, arts fanatic or foodie in Leeds during the past ten years, then there is only one event that you need to go to in August. It’s the Garden Party at Leeds’ answer to Trouw, The Tetley.

This two day festival collates and celebrates the big hitters of the city’s creative industries to create a mouth watering bill of music, art, food and drink.

It’s no surprise that it is such an accomplished line up. The Garden Party brand have been at it for 10 years now. It is just one tendril of the promoting powerhouse Sound Channel, which incorporates The Warehouse Project in Manchester (who have just release their line ups for this year), Canal Mills, and Chibuku in Liverpool, and who recently bought an island in Croatia to add to their Hideout Festival site. Having formerly staged the event at the Faversham, they have transferred to Leeds’ mothership of the avant-garde and newest outdoor music venue, The Tetley, first used back in June for the Made In Leeds Festival.

The line-up tastefully marries the finest in live bands and DJs. Headlining will be Moloko’s Roisin Murphy (playing her incredible new solo work and timeless classics), the best Swedish band since Abba, Little Dragon, and another Scandanavian, Todd Terje. There will also be appearances from such legends as Black Star’s Talib Kweli, Soul II Soul, Kerri Chandler and Grandmaster Flash, as well as contemporary favourites such as Julio Bashmore, Joy Orbison and Fatima and the Eglo Band.

The festival has gained further support of some of Leeds’ well-loved brands: KMAH Radio (whose Soundsystem will DJ over the weekend), Good Life, Deep Fever, Alter and Origins to name but a few.

The Garden Party will also showcase the finest institutions on Leeds’ thriving and exponentially growing independent food scene. Boozy Q BBQ, Fish& and Northern Bloc will be some of the stalls putting a tasty end to your munchies, while a comprehensive craft beer stall will help you to wash it all down.

Finishing touches will be provided by Leeds’ artistic powerhouses Mad Ferret, &or Emporium and Medium.

The event takes place on August Bank Holiday weekend (Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th August, 12:00-23:00) at The Tetley. Day tickets start at £19.50 and weekend tickets at £29.50 and can be purchased here. They can also be bought from Crash, Jumbo and Trinity shopping centre.
